In 1994, on April 27th, South Africa marked its place in world history by holding its first ever official Democratic general elections in which Nelson Mandela, the man who would become an international symbol of hope, was elected. Mandela, colloquially known around the world as “Madiba” (his clan name), made history on two fronts, being both the first black president and the first democratically elected president of the young nation.
In honor of the man who inspired millions of people, helped build a nation and break the racial divides that held back the South African people throughout its history, the UN announced officially in 2009 that May 18th would be recognized internationally as ‘Mandela Day’, with the first official celebration happening in 2010. While this was the first official celebration, the 18th of May 2009 saw a host of celebrations, art exhibitions, fund raisers and volunteering drives set up by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the organizers of the annual 46664 concert.
